March 12, 2023 — The Chardon High School Chorale (joined by eighth-grade boys choir) and Treble Choir (joined by eighth-grade girls choir), in all over 100 students, had the honor of performing at the Ohio Music Education Association Large Group Event at Mentor High School on March 6. This judged event provided students with opportunities to hear feedback and grow their musicianship through performance.

The choirs were directed by Chardon choir director Fritz Streiff and his student teacher Gavin O'Keefe from Case Western Reserve University. On Feb. 28, Mr. Streiff hosted Dr. Clark from CWRU to serve as the clinician as the ensembles prepared for the OMEA event.

On March 6, Hilltoppers performed three pieces (for three judges):

Chorale
  • Ubi Caritas (Gjeilo)
  • TaReKita (Esmail)
  • Soon-ah Will Be Done (Dawson)
Treble Choir
  • Hold Fast to Dreams (LaBarr)
  • Ikan Kekek (Hang Tan)
  • Shadow River (Hagenberg)

Next, the choirs proceeded to the Sight Reading Room where they were given a new piece of literature to learn with only five minutes of preparation, utilizing the solfège method to develop their understanding of pitch within the new piece. Within minutes, the choirs are expected to sing the piece without accompaniment.

“The choirs did a wonderful job in their preparation and performance,” stated Mr. Streiff. “Chorale received the top rating of a 1, receiving straight 1s from all three of the judges for their performance. Chorale received a 2 on sight reading but brought home a composite score of a 1 for the day. Treble Choir earned a 2 from the performance judges and had a strong showing with a 1 rating on the sight reading portion. Congratulations to our CHS choir students on their outstanding commitment to excellence through performance.”
