750 Cards for Veterans and Caregivers

December 17, 2023 — Park Elementary students put their caring hearts and creative thoughts to paper last month, making 750 greeting cards to brighten the days and show gratitude to U.S. military veterans and their caregivers.

The project was made possible by the collaboration of the Park PTO, which generously contributed the card materials; and parent Stephanie Cahill who helped coordinate the project and deliver the cards to the VA Northeast Ohio Caregiver Support Program.

The cards were distributed by the program nationwide!

Over time, students learned how their cards made an impact via thank you notes sent to the school's principal, Jill Makee. Following are two examples:

Hi Mrs. Makee,

Our Veterans and Caregivers in the Caregiver support program have been receiving their cards and we’ve had an overwhelmingly positive and grateful response. I wanted to send one that really touched my heart- it reminds me of the starfish parable:

“Hi Stephanie, I just thought you would like to know that the beautiful thank you cards that we received and the warm wishes for Veteran’s Day and Caregiver’s Month brought such a smile to our faces.

It’s truly the little things that matter the most. Please thank these very wonderful children and let them know how special this was for me. Let them know my gratitude- they need to know how they have touched my life and many other Veterans’ and Caregivers’ lives with this one small act of kindness.”

Dear Sir or Madam,

Greetings from San Diego, California. Last week I received a wonderful letter and picture from one of your students, Kamryn. (featured in photo at top of news story)

The letter thanked me for my military service. I am a retired Army Nurse, a Major with 22 years of military time, and this letter and picture made me feel so appreciated and loved.

Your school is to be commended on this special project. Thank you and please keep up the good work.

With All Sincerity,

Ruth Duke

VA Northeast Ohio Caregiver Support Program later presented Park students with an Honorary Little Heroes Award at an assembly held at the school.

Congratulations to Park on a successful service project made possible by putting into action your Topper traits of Collaboration, Contribution and more!
