OPEN CAMPUS - DEFINITION
What is Open Campus?
“Open Campus” is when students leave or arrive at the school building throughout the school day.

For the 2024-25 school year —

Open Campus privilege will be available for 1st period and 8th period for seniors who meet the following requirements:

  • Maintain a signed parent/guardian authorization
  • On track to graduate in May, 2025, and stay on-track (no F’s)
  • Cumulative 3.0 GPA, and maintain a quarterly 3.0 GPA
  • No more than three (3) tardies per quarter, and no unexcused or excessive excused absences
  • No behavioral referrals

Open Campus privilege will only be for seniors for 1st period and 8th period. It will not be available for seniors to leave or arrive at the school building throughout the school day.

TIMELINE
Why are we just hearing now about Open Campus changes for 2024-25?
Schedule changes for the upcoming school year were presented to the Board at the regular Board of Education meeting on December 11, 2023.

Planning has continued since that time, and the District's April 11, 2024 announcement to families provided advanced ahead of the 2024-25 school year.

INITIAL OPEN CAMPUS IMPLEMENTATION
Why did the District initially implement Open Campus?
Open Campus was implemented in 2018 during the reconfiguration of the school district to our current buildings and grade levels, and we maintained Open Campus privilege during the pandemic.

At the time of reconfiguration (2018-19), there were over 1,200 students enrolled at the high school.  For the 2024-25 school year, 1,028 students are enrolled.

CURRENT ENROLLMENT
What is the enrollment at the high school?  I heard the high school is overcrowded.
For 2024-25, there are 1,028 students enrolled at the high school. This is similar enrollment to when the high school did not offer Open Campus privilege (2002-2014).

SAFETY & SECURITY
How does Open Campus align with our safety and security procedures?
Allowing students to enter and exit the school building throughout the school day does not align with the District's enhanced safety and security procedures.

By revising the Open Campus privilege, we are seeking to:

  • Minimize the safety and security concerns with students entering and exiting the school building throughout the school day;
  • Minimize security concerns with students letting other students and visitors in through any door other than the main entrance;
  • Minimize safety concerns with students crossing Canfield Road throughout the school day;
  • Minimize the safety and security concerns caused by increased student vehicular traffic throughout the school day.
STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT
How will this increase student achievement?
We have experienced an increase in both tardies and unexcused absences (students not returning to school) with the current operation of open campus.  By limiting open campus as a privilege, attendance in classes will improve.

Chardon High School offers a vast array of courses across content areas, and students will have the opportunity to take more of these courses. Additionally, students will have more access to teacher-supported interventions, such as Math Lab.

CCP & AUBURN CLASSES
How will this affect students with CCP or Auburn classes?
Students with College Credit Plus courses (off-campus) or Auburn classes may still exit and enter the building throughout the school day to attend those programs.

WORK-STUDY
How will this affect students with jobs where they are scheduled to work during school hours?
The state of Ohio does not permit students to work a job during school hours unless they are enrolled in a work-study program. Students interested in a work-study program should see their guidance counselor.
