October 26, 2023 — Chardon Middle School seventh-grade science teachers kicked off the Auburn Career Center Tape and Rule program for their students this fall, hosting ACC Career Development Coordinator Joseph Wargo on Sept. 5 for an information-rich, interactive presentation followed by hands-on, student collaboration opportunities.

Combined with Chardon Schools science education, this partnership with ACC provides a high-quality learning experience for Hilltoppers!

The goal of the ACC Tape and Rule Program is to support seventh-grade learning of measurement 101s, including vocabulary and tools, including tapes, rules and calipers; and gain understanding of the real-world application of measurement in careers. Ultimately, each student will have the opportunity to take an exam to earn certification in measurement!

To help students make the connection to real-world applications of measurement, Mr. Wargo highlighted the critical role of measurement in the following ACC programs:

  • Advanced Manufacturing
  • Auto Collision Repair
  • Construction
  • Criminal Justice
  • HVAC
  • Plant, Turf and Landscape Management
  • Production and Welding Technology

A supplementary video presentation showcased ACC students discussing and demonstrating how measurement plays a vital role in their everyday career learning experiences at ACC, including:

~Measuring film thickness
~Leveling component planes
~Adjusting equipment decks
~Measuring plant (vegetation) layout
~Ensuring part sizes are within tolerance limits
~Cutting sheet metal ducts
~High-accuracy evidence collection in criminal cases
+MUCH MORE!

Through the video, ACC students also provided real-world "what happens with a project" examples when precise measurements are not made, helping to reinforce for Hilltoppers how measurement plays a crucial role in success.

Hilltopper students then had the opportunity to work together in small groups taking and recording measurements that included their own heights!
