Students Travel for BGSU Study Abroad Insights
Hilltoppers are Continuous Learners

October 10, 2023 — Chardon High School Spanish IV and Advanced Placement Spanish students were selected to travel to Willoughby South High School with CHS Spanish language educator Stacy Tekavec on Sept. 14 for a summer study abroad — in Spain — program presentation by Bowling Green State University associate professor Dr. Susana Juaréz.

South’s Spanish IV and AP Spanish students, as well as Eastlake North’s Spanish IV students, were also chosen to attend this event.

Presenter Dr.
Juaréz, whose passion is guiding students in stretching — both academically and personally while studying abroad — traveled all the way from Spain for this and additional U.S. events that same week in September. The Willoughby South event was organized by South High School Spanish language teacher and student travel leader Beth Visnick.

Dr. Juaréz' presentation was supplemented by prior study abroad participants speaking on behalf of their own experiences through the BGSU program.

Excerpt from Dr. Juaréz' BGSU Bio:
"...She teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in Spanish Grammar, Writing and Conversation. As the resident director for the Academic Year Abroad Program in Spain, her responsibilities are both administrative and educational. She also maintains and strengthens professional relationships with American and Spanish institutions such as the US Embassy in Madrid, The Association of North American University Programs in Spain, for which she acted as executive president for four years..."

Our very own CHS Spanish language teacher Carrie Korenke describes the benefits of international studies from her own academic experience, stating, “Studying abroad was a life-changing experience for me. It helped me to see the world through a different lens by understanding a different culture. Not only did it improve my Spanish language skills, but it taught me how to be more independent and face challenges head on. I would encourage all students to do a study abroad program.”
