Mission of the Chardon Schools: We Commit to High Achievement for All Students
October 8, 2023 — Congratulations to Chardon High School on being named on Oct. 2 by the College Board to the Advanced Placement® School Honor Roll with a Silver Distinction for 2023. This noteworthy school achievement recognizes CHS' outstanding work in welcoming more students into AP® courses, delivering results, and supporting AP® students on the path to college success.
AP® courses allow high achieving, highly motivated high school students to undertake college-level academic learning.
Trevor Packer, head of the College Board AP® program stated, “AP represents an opportunity for students to stand out to colleges, earn college credit and placement, and potentially boost their grade point averages. The AP School Honor Roll-recognized schools have shown that they can expand access to these college-level courses and still drive high performance – they represent the best of our AP® program.”
At CHS, 16 Chardon educators teach 18 AP courses in 26 sections. The exams, administered in May, give students the opportunity to earn college credit, advanced placement or both from hundreds of colleges and universities that participate in the AP® program.
CHS 2022-23 Summary
- 57% (140) Seniors Took at Least 1 AP Exam During High School
- 37% (90) Seniors Scored a 3 or Higher on at Least One AP Exam
- 10% (24) Seniors Took 5 or More AP Exams
- 65 Students (juniors & seniors) earned AP® Scholar Awards from the College Board
CHS principal Doug Murray stated, "The courses make substantial academic demands on students. Students are required to do considerable outside reading and other assignments to demonstrate the analytical skills and writing abilities expected of college freshmen."
According to the College Board, research shows that students who take AP® courses and exams are more likely to attend college and graduate on time. The students who enter four-year colleges with credit from AP® accelerate their path to graduation and build confidence for college success. And even for those who don’t earn college credit, AP® coursework provides early exposure to college-level work and contributes to a college-going school culture.
Principal Murray added, "It takes a significant school-wide effort — dedication from teachers, counselors, administrators, students, and parents—to make AP® access a priority. Special thanks to CHS guidance counselor Tim Hurlbut, who is our AP® Exam Coordinator."
