January 12, 2024 — Chardon High School's long-running Academic Decathlon Coach Al Herner expounds on a near-and-dear-to-him example of how Hilltoppers are well-rounded, specifically that they often demonstrate the Portrait of a Hilltopper trait of Commitment...to multiple commitments.

According to Coach Herner, as just one case-in-point of the talented 2024 Chardon ACADEC 11-member team, over half of the members are student athletes on the Hilltopper Swim Team.

After attending the Chardon vs. Eastlake North swim meet at Willoughby South on Jan. 6, Coach Herner stated, “It really reinforced for me what I tell people all the time — Chardon students are some of the most well-rounded students you will find. They participate in multiple sports and activities, oftentimes simultaneously.”

Herner fondly referred to sophomore Toby Rogers, junior Danny Greene, freshmen Jack Bennett and Gus Schneider, junior Kayla Schneider and senior Lizzy Rockenberger as “ACASWIM/SWIMADEC" team members as he explained how this group of students uses new information to maintain progress towards their goals both in and out of the classroom...or in and out of the pool.

Coach Herner added, “Competition season for both teams ramps up in February and March. Some even take on Model UN at the same time. I really got to see their competitive drive through a different lens. When I see an ACADEC student power through seven different tests back to back and walk out of the room smiling I know they are accessing the same grit and determination they draw upon in the pool.”
