March 22, 2023 — Chardon Middle School seventh-grade student, Natasha Sutter, whose Cultivating with Compost science experiment earned 2nd-place in the school's Jan. 25 judged science fair and advanced to the Ohio Academy of Science District Science Day held March 18 at the University of Akron has more to celebrate! Natasha achieved a Superior rating at the in-person format of the district competition, emerging as a State qualifier.
As an Ohio Academy of Science STATE State Science Day competitor, Natasha will be among over 1,000 students (Grades 5-12) at The Ohio State University on May 13, each presenting their research for the opportunity to win from nearly $400,000 in scholarships and awards.
Students will also visit their topic category area of study on OSU’s campus and have lunch with practitioners in their topic category, followed by an awards ceremony.
Natasha's award-winning project, Cultivating with Compost, investigates whether compost affects seed germination. The results of her testing process earlier this school year led Natasha to conclude that the plants she grew with the most compost were the plants with the largest average height.
CMS science teacher Melissa Efantis was excited to share the news of Natasha's state qualification earlier this week and reports that she is full steam ahead in helping Natasha prepare for the State competition.
Fellow classmate and also a CMS seventh-grade student of Mrs. Efantis — Lena Bielata — whose Apple Oxidation science experiment earned 1st-place in the school's Jan. 25 judged science fair, is competing in the virtual format of District Science Day this Saturday — March 25.
Congratulations to Natasha on her State qualification and Best Wishes at State Science Day!
Best Wishes to Lena as she heads to the District Science Fair this weekend!
GO HILLTOPPERS!
