July 7, 2023 — The Chardon Board of Education gratefully nominated five (5) local businesses to the Ohio School Boards Association's 2023 Business Honor Roll in honor of each organization's exceptional commitment to Chardon Local Schools:

  • Chardon ATA Martial Arts and Karate for Kids and Chardon's Best Summer Camp and After School
Through ownership and operation of both Chardon ATA and Chardon’s Best, Mr. Scott DeShetler has made significant monetary donations to school events, including the Color Run, and also co-hosted PTO events for Munson Elementary and Park Elementary students. Recent co-hosted events included “The Floor is Lava” and a “Glow Party”.

Never expected but always surprised, our PTOs have — more than once — been on the receiving end of Mr. DeShetler donating back the very proceeds earned from co-hosting, allowing our parent-teacher groups to re-invest in further social and learning opportunities for Hilltopper students.

Via both businesses, Mr. DeShetler goes above and beyond with his support and is creative in doing so. He truly captures the spirit of community giving.

  • NDS Orthodontics
Dr. Steven Gajda has a long-standing history of supporting Chardon Schools through significant monetary donations to affiliated groups that have a direct, positive impact on opportunities for Hilltopper students, including PTOs, Science Olympiad, the Chardon Schools Foundation and Athletic Boosters, as well as establishing the Dr. Steven and Meredith Gajda Health Care Scholarship to support the District's graduates.

In addition to financial contributions, Dr. Gajda also enjoys partnering with our educators in the classroom, such as guest speaking on innovations in orthodontics, including technological advances and highlighting tie-ins to STEM concepts learned in the classroom.

Together with his wife Mrs. Meredith Gajda, the two are friendly faces and ardent supporters of school events, donating their time as seasoned volunteers in school-sponsored programs. Their support of Chardon Schools is a heart-warming gift felt by many.

  • Reel’s Auto Sales
The students and staff of Chardon Middle School have been fortunate to have the support of Reel’s Auto Sales owner Mr. Dan Reel and operations manager Mrs. Nicole Reel. The dealership has been a major supporter of multiple school programs through monetary
donations, and Mr. and Mrs. Reel are equally generous with their time as school event volunteers.

Principal Tomco stated that giving of their time and resources behind-the-scenes is a noticed hallmark of the Reels though they shy away from public recognition of their altruism.

Always present during fundraising events, conference mealtime catering, various school committees, and class parties, Mr. and Mrs. Reel’s generosity is felt at every event.

  • Ten10 Design
Chardon High School nominated Ten10 Design to the business honor roll for special project support. Ten10 Design has collaborated with our student leaders for the past two years in the #27BeTheChange and Pink Shirt Day initiatives that take place in the month of February.

As one example, Ten10 was innovative and creative in designing the Pink Shirt Day t-shirt with our students and helping promote momentum for district-wide participation in this global initiative that raises awareness of bullying and embraces individuality.

Thank you to Ten10 Design owners Mrs. Casey Zulandt and Mr. Joe Zulandt for supporting Hilltoppers in their desire to cultivate more kindness and understanding in the world.
Congratulations to our 2023 nominees! Each of the five businesses was formally recognized in-person by the Chardon Board of Education at the June 19, 2023 regular board meeting. Complete list of Ohio school districts' 2023 nominations

Chardon Local Schools looks forward to nominating another round of local, District-supporting organizations in 2024! Stay tuned.
