March 9, 2023 — Chardon Middle School 7th-grade students Lena Bielata and Natasha Sutter placed 1st and 2nd, respectively, in the school’s Jan. 25 judged science fair, qualifying them for the Ohio Academy of Science District 5 Science Day Fair at Akron University on March 18!

The Hilltoppers are students in Mrs. Efantis’ Science 7 class.

What are District Science Days?

1,000s of Ohio students compete annually in District Science Days for the opportunity to attend State Science Day held at The Ohio State University.

District Science Days offer students a chance to have their research judged by scientific professionals and compete for thousands of dollars in student scholarships.

The Hilltopper Projects

Lena, now in her second year of competing at the district level, created Apple Oxidation as her science fair project this year — a continuation of her project from the previous school year.

This year, Lena conducted experiments to determine if the pH level of an apple affects its reaction to browning.

She concluded from testing that pH level of an apple is a factor in browning, noting that gala and gold ambrosia apples’ results were almost identical as their pH levels are so close whereas Fuji and Granny Smith apples reacted differently because their pH levels are distant from that of the Gala and Gold Ambrosia apples.

Natasha’s project, Cultivating with Compost, tested whether compost affects seed germination.

Mrs. Efantis stated that this is a topic which Natasha is very passionate about.

From the results of her experiments, Natasha reported that the plants she grew with the most compost were the plants with the largest average height.

She stated that she believes that more compost boosts such nutrients as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, making the plants grow taller than those with less compost.
