November 4, 2022 — Chardon Baseball Div-II State Champs '22, including Head Coach Long and student athletes, provided an informative and interactive presentation at Chardon Middle School on Nov. 4 for 7th-Grade Baseball Day, a culminating math unit event for the CMS Hilltoppers.

Coach Long led an energetic, one-hour presentation on Chardon Baseball's use of ratios, stats and probability and the crucial role applied analytics plays in team success.

The presentation also included a trivia round - prizes:  Big League Chew gum!; and an introduction to the Trackman Analytic System (which clocks an average of 90mph for both Jake Barker's swing and Nolan Kirsh's pitch!).

In addition to Jake Barker and Nolan Kirsh, Chardon Baseball student athletes participating in 7th-Grade Baseball Day included Leo Colombi, Ethan Faber, Brandon Fatur, Stone Fawcett, Heath Fetchik, Hunter Greco, Austin Leszynski and Will Francis.

Also in attendance for a portion of the presentation was Chardon Baseball leadership volunteer and math wizard Coach Francis.

Did you know Mr. Francis, a CMS 6th-grade math teacher, is a significant support to the team in his free time, tracking opposing teams' pitching stats and patterns to guide Chardon Baseball strategy and preparedness for each game?

"Because the variable from game to game is the team that we play," stated Coach Long.

Following the presentation, 7th-graders were treated to an hour of Wiffle® ball on the field adjacent to Memorial Field; a movie; and a CMS Hilltoppers PTO stadium-themed snack — hot dogs & popcorn (thank you CMS PTO!).

Also a note of gratitude to CMS Principal Tomco and 7th-grade math teachers for coordinating this fun, applied learning day for CMS Toppers.

Coach Long stated: "I was very impressed by this 7th-grade class."
