January 6, 2022 — Chardon Middle School's 6th-grade classes were pleased to launch the 2021-22 Junior Achievement® Economics for Success program last month, an endeavor made — in large part — possible by community volunteers. The program, which is directly tied to the economic standards in social studies, provides students with lessons on financial literacy, work and career readiness, and entrepreneurship.
The school’s sixth-grade faculty members who are hosting the JA® are Ms. Ellen Bostwick, Mr. Bob Francis, Ms. Hallee Habeeb, Mr. Kent Hadden, Mrs. Rachel Holub, Mrs. Lacey Kallay, Mr. Ed Mullaly and Mrs. Suzanne Whiteman.
One volunteer is assigned per class. Students are taught once each week by their class-assigned volunteer using JA® materials and curriculum together with assistance from the classroom teacher.
“Thank you so much to community volunteers Ms. Sarah Core, Mr. Brent Dickerson, Mr. Matt Fullerman, Mrs. Jamie Miller, Mr. Brian Muoio, Mr. Les Murphy, Mr. CJ Paterniti and Mrs. Melanie Scanlon for their willingness to support this initiative,” said CMS principal Tim Velotta. “A very special thanks also to CMS parent Mrs. Courtney Erminio who took an impressive lead in recruiting volunteers through her network and connections to help get the program off the ground at CMS.”
Mr. Velotta said that it is his goal to expand JA® programming to all grade levels at CMS, and Mrs. Erminio’s recent support and future recruitment efforts of business partners and associates are equally appreciated.
As a big step in that direction, Mrs. Erminio’s employer, The Middlefield Banking Company, has generously agreed to sponsor and provide all volunteers for the school’s 4th-grade JA® in a Day event this upcoming May. This high-impact, condensed event provides JA® lessons to students in the course of one school day.
All JA® programming at CMS is advised by Mr. George Phillips who serves as the program manager for Junior Achievement® of Greater Cleveland, a regional branch of Junior Achievement® USA. To learn more about the local initiative, visit https://cleveland.ja.org/
