4th Grade Virtual Student CogAT Testing

November 9, 2020

Dear 4th Grade Virtual Families;

As we have been communicating we have slated Wednesday, 11/11/2020, for your virtual 4th-graders to come in person to take the CogAT test.  The CogAT is a nationally standardized test that measures reasoning and problem-solving skills in three areas: verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal.  Reasoning skills develop gradually throughout a person’s lifetime and at different rates for different individuals.  Reasoning abilities are good predictors of success in school. The CogAT does not measure such factors as effort, attention, motivation, and work habits which also contribute to school achievement.

Data from this is used by teachers to better understand a student’s strengths and weaknesses, as well as for gifted identification and accelerated class placement.

This test cannot be given virtually at this time, which is why we have reserved this Wednesday to have the LGIR available for your children to attend in person should you want them to take the test.

I have been asked if this test is required - it is not.  The data is useful, but if you do not want your child to come to the building that is fine.  A written request for testing can be submitted in future years per the Ohio Operating Standards

If you plan for your child to attend, please plan to drop your child off at CMS at 9:00am, and pick-up at 2:00pm.  Your child should have a mask, packed lunch, and number 2 pencils.  Students will enter the main door, have their temperature screened, and then be escorted to the LGIR.  There are 27 virtual 4th-grade students - the LGIR is rated to have over 60 while maintaining social distancing.  Mr. Matticoli and Miss Madden are aware of this testing and do not plan to provide new instruction or work for students on this day.

After each subtest or two (there are 10), 4th-grade school counselor Mrs. Barnett will lead the students in an activity allowing them to take a brain break and have some social interaction with one another as this may be the only time students are together in person.

Please click HERE by 3:30pm on Tuesday, 11/10, to complete a form indicating your intent for your child to participate in these tests.

Sincerely,

Timothy Velotta
