March 26, 2021 — When Maple School Kindergarten teacher Miss Chloe Ellis spearheaded a food drive with the school’s Kindergarten and pre-Kindergarten classes earlier this month, she set 200 boxes of cereal as the school’s goal with the dangling carrot of a “domino cereal train event” on March 25 — if Maple School could collect 200 boxes of cereal for local food pantries by March 24.

“My class eagerly awaited, looking at the numbers of cereal boxes collected each day grow and grow,” said Miss Ellis.

With just over 240 students enrolled at the school, making that exciting reward promise a reality seemed possible. However, a more thrilling outcome was in store with Tiny Toppers families rising far above the occasion and generously donating 450 boxes of cereal by the set end date.

One day later, March 25, the final total came in at nearly 500 due to additional boxes of cereal donated by Chardon High School’s National Honor Society.

It was a true community effort from Hilltopper families. Maple School was also thankful to have the support of Geauga-TV and a News Herald reporter on the scene to cover the story and the impressive outdoor setup and run of the “cereal box domino train” made possible by CHS NHS students.

Even Mother Nature cooperated fully with sunshine and spring-like temperatures.

“We are so lucky to have such kind kids and families in Chardon,” said Miss Ellis. “Also, I want to give a HUGE thank you to the NHS students who helped set up, organize, etc. They are amazing.”

A staff member from Pilgrim Christian Church in Chardon, which is graciously handling distribution of the donated cereal to those in need, said it was the largest donation of one item they might have ever received. The church is sharing the massive collection with a pantry in Burton and also with Geauga County Veteran Food Pantry,

“With Kindergarten, it is often hard to show how they can make a difference,” added Miss Ellis. “They really understood they were helping people in need in our community. Students even said ‘that is going to help so many people.’”
