MUNSON ELEMENTARY REDEDICATES BELL, PLANS TO OPEN TIME CAPSULE

Sept. 16, 2024 (MUNSON, OHIO) — The Munson Elementary bell was rededicated Friday afternoon during a ceremony celebrating the history and spirit of the school and honoring veterans who have served our country.

Principal Mathew Prezioso said the bell has stood as a “beacon of our community values at Munson,” since it was installed in 1959. The bell was previously rededicated in 1995.

“The bell continues to symbolize our commitment to honoring our veterans and upholding the spirit of our school,” Prezioso said.

During the rededication ceremony, students, staff and parents in attendance heard from Lynn Algeri, director of the Geauga County Veteran Food Pantry.

Geauga County Veteran Food Pantry Director Lynn Algeri thanked Munson Elementary for its commitment to helping the local veteran community.

Algeri thanked Munson Elementary for being “faithful supporters” of the food pantry for several years.

“Honoring, respecting and supporting our veterans has been taught in all of your homes, supported here in your school and has been an example within your community,” Algeri said.

To thank the school for its continued support of local veterans, Burton American Legion Post 459 Honor Guard retired the American Flag which had flown above the bell at Munson Elementary and replaced it with a new one.

The new American Flag the honor guard raised at Munson was flown over the United States Capitol on July, 17, 2024 at the request of Congressman Dave Joyce.

The new flag, which flew over the United States Capitol on July 17, 2024, was raised to fly over the school.

“This is really a big honor for us to have this beautiful flag that was flown over our nation’s capitol,” Prezioso said. “When you’re coming in and out of school, when you’re driving by, you’ll see this flag and you’ll know that it flew over Washington D.C.”

When the bell was rededicated in 1995, fifth grade students at Munson Elementary put together a time capsule which was buried under the bell.

That time capsule was marked as intended to be opened in 2025.

Munson Third Grade Student Jylen Devonshire rang the bell in honor of its rededication.

Prezioso told those in attendance that the time capsule will be opened at the end of the 2024-25 school year.

“We’ll have a nice assembly at the end of school, open that up, and then we are going to make a new time capsule to be opened 30 years from the end of this school year, in 2055,” he said.
