Munson Elementary is pleased to present two checks this month — each in the amount of $1,345.77 — to
Geauga County Veteran Food Pantry and Sub Zero Mission.

These charitable actions are possible solely because of the generosity of Munson students and families contributing to the school’s Penny Wars drive held in honor of Veterans Day this past November.

Penny Wars, one of many veterans-honoring events at the school, had record-breaking success this school year, with classrooms raising a whopping $2,691.55 for the two local veterans non-profits.

First-grade student Cody Mills and his family alone contributed well over $250, making him the highest donor to this community service project.

The school was pleased to host Geauga County Veteran Food Pantry - represented by Director Lynn Algeri, Pantry Supervisor Pam Wiech, and IT/Communications Representative Chris Larker - at an all-grades assembly held in the school gymnasium on Jan. 12.

Third-grade student Ethan Ovanic presented Ms. Algeri with Munson's donation.

Ms. Algeri took a moment at the mic to enthusiastically thank the school for their generosity. She gave an overview of the food pantry’s mission and reach, serving 4,000 meals each month to veterans, their families, and families of deceased veterans. All meals from the pantry are made possible by donations.

In addition, Ms. Algeri presented school principal Mat Prezioso with a certificate of appreciation for the school from the Geauga County Food Pantry. The school looks forward to hanging this certificate proudly in the building as a reminder to students of their great act of service.

Munson equally looks forward to awarding Sub Zero Mission with the Penny Wars donation at a later date. Understandably, in the throes of their busiest season, the non-profit did not have availability to attend the assembly as they are all hands-on-deck serving the community.

Sub Zero Mission, which concentrates on serving veterans who make up a high percentage of the homeless, helps the homeless stay warm during the winter months by providing hats, coats, gloves, boots, sleeping bags, new socks, tents and other warming items. Like the food pantry, Sub Zero Mission relies entirely on donations to fulfill its mission.
