March 9, 2023 — Nathan Suszynski, a first-year Auburn Career Center welding student and Chardon High School junior , is already taking advantage of the numerous opportunities that Auburn has to offer to jumpstart his future.

Nathan has already earned three certifications including the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) 6G pipe certification.

“The ASME 6G certification is the holy grail of certifications,” said Jared Rogge, Auburn’s welding instructor. “It's very difficult to obtain; especially for a first-year student. I am extremely proud of Nathan for this remarkable achievement.”

In Rogge’s eight years instructing at Auburn, three students earned this certification. Suszynski is the only student who earned it during his first year.

Pipe welding is difficult to master. The test for the ASME 6G pipe certification is extremely challenging. Two cylindrical metal pipes must be joined together through shielded metal arc welding. The two pieces of pipe are in a 45-degree position requiring the welder to use both hands.

“I felt pretty good that I would pass it, but there’s always a chance things won’t go the way you want,” said Suszynski. “I love it here at Auburn. The opportunities career and technical education provides are amazing. It showed me what I want to do with the rest of my life and revealed a passion I didn’t even know I had.”

Suszynski credits his instructor’s support and encouragement with his success. After high school, he plans to pursue a career in welding and possibly own his own business.
