Pull Tabs for Ronald McDonald House

We are collecting pull tabs for Ronald McDonald House!  There is a collection jar in the cafeteria so your student can bring tabs from home in his or her lunchbox or drop them in during lunch. Tabs can be from pop cans, pet food, soup cans, anything!  They will be taken to Ronald McDonald House where they are sold for recycling.

Field Trip Scholarships Fundraising Opportunities

Mrs. Kate Breen has coordinated 2 fundraising events that will go directly to our CMS Field Trip Scholarship fund.  The first opportunity is Sunday, April 7, from 12 - 5pm at Panini's in Chagrin Falls. Please just present THIS flyer (or mention that you're with Chardon) and they'll give us a percent of the proceeds.

The second opportunity is Saturday, April 13 at 1:30.  If you've always wanted to give boxing a try, now is your chance! :) Title Boxing Club is offering a free class at its Mentor location with 100% of the donations directed to the scholarship fund.  If this is something you're interested in, please contact kate.breen@chardonschools.org.

Testing

The Ohio AIR tests, while only one data point in time, are the most public measure of schools’ effectiveness and student learning.  We ask that you please do everything possible to be sure that your child is in attendance on the following days:

  • April 16 & 17:  ELA (all grades)

  • April 24 & 25:  5th Grade Science

  • May 1 & 2:  Math (all grades)

At the beginning of the year, all students were provided earbuds and ODE-approved calculators for students in grades 6, 7 and those taking 5th grade accelerated math.  Recently we have noticed that many students do not have these items with them in class. Please talk with your child and make sure that they have earbuds / headphones and an approved calculator daily in all classes.

National Poetry Month @ Holden Arboretum

Recently several 7th graders in Mrs. Cher Culliton’s classes participated in a poetry writing activity sponsored by the Holden Arboretum.  Congratulations to Julia Ellington, Jake Maczuzak, Megan Robie, and Rae Kawalec who all wrote poems that have been selected to be put up on the Spring Haiku Trail at The Holden Arboretum.  In addition, Evelyn Kennedy’s artwork and poem will be displayed in the Visitor Center.  Congrats to all of our great poets!

Absences

While it is always extremely helpful to inform your child’s teachers of a planned absence, please also be sure to use the attendance line to inform the main office of your child’s absence to be sure it is recorded properly:   440.285.4062, then press 1 for absences. Failure to report your child’s absence will result in it being marked as unexcused.

Scheduling Information

There will be an informational night on Wednesday, March 13th at 6:30 pm in the CHS gymnasium for parents of current 7th and 8th grade students regarding scheduling information for next year.  Please contact the high school counselors with any questions.

Information has been shared with current 5th grade students to prepare to submit their elective requests this coming week.  Current 6th grade students have submitted their specials requests.

Current 4th graders should begin thinking about their music choice for next year - choir or band.  More information will be shared later regarding instrument try-outs, vocal auditions, etc., but for now just know this is the only selection that current 4th graders will have to make for scheduling for next year.

For all grade-levels, students will automatically be placed into the appropriate academic classes based on the established criteria for those classes.  There will be an opportunity for students who may not meet the state gifted criteria who are wishing to jump into the accelerated math path to complete a summer learning experience and placement test in order to do so.  More information on this option for current 5th, 6th and 7th grade students will be available after spring break.

Before we begin building student schedules all parents will be given the opportunity to “sign-off” on your child’s course requests and placements.  This will occur during the last few weeks of school.
